The Big Dipper

As we were learning about the stars and the constellations, we learned about The Big Dipper as part of the constellation Ursa Major, or The Big Bear. We were able to see the Big Dipper as well as most of our constellations on the Star Walk application on an iPad. We also read and found out more information about The Big Dipper and how it helps you find other constellations and the North Star.
We also learned:
  • that the Big Dipper can help you find the Little Dipper
  • that there are three stars in the handle and four stars in the bowl of the Big Dipper
  • that the Big Dipper looks different in different seasons
  • that in the summer the Big Dipper looks upside down
  • that the North Star is a guide star
  • that you can see the Big Dipper year round
